HRM is ‘en pointe’ with ballet star
We’re lucky at HRM because we get to work with a variety of clients across different industries, meaning that no two days are the same. And recently we have ‘chasséd’ in to a completely new area by working with a young Barnsley-born ballet dancer, Tala Lee Turton.
In 2016, Tala, aged 21, became only the third ever British female to graduate from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Russia - one of the most prestigious ballet schools in the world.
Soon after graduating last year, Tala went on to secure a coveted place at the Astrakhan State Opera and Ballet Theatre. She is now one of a select group of British dancers who has made the transition from student to professional in Russia, with a job at one of the prestigious state-funded classical ballet companies
Tala has also now embarked on a UK wide tour with Astrakhan at theatres across the UK, including venues in York, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Swansea and Chesterfield. The tour marks Tala’s first time performing as a professional in the UK.
The shows are being produced by the Russian State Opera and Ballet House and Tala is performing in productions of Swan Lake, Nutcracker and Romeo and Juliet.
But Tala’s career aspirations don’t stop at being a Bolshoi graduate and a member of a prestigious Russian ballet company - her next ambition is to develop her choreographic skills. Recognising a distinct lack of female choreographers in the industry, this is a gap Tala is determined to help fill.
She has recently worked with young artists in the dance, film and music industries to produce two showcase videos using her own creative choreography – one filmed at Wentworth Woodhouse in South Yorkshire which is close to Tala’s family home in Barnsley.
For the last few months we have been helping to raise Tala’s profile both within the ballet industry and in the mainstream media, creating media contacts links and liaising with journalists to highlight Tala’s fantastic achievements.
We’ve worked with specialist industry publications to secure coverage for Tala, including the Wonderful World of Dance, who featured an in-depth video and written interview with Tala about her career to date and her aspirations for the future.
On a regional level, we’ve worked closely with media outlets including BBC news online, Look North, Calendar, BBC Radio Sheffield, the Yorkshire Post, the Barnsley Chronicle and the Sheffield Star to gain coverage across each platform, which has been a huge success.
And coming up we’re going to be focusing on the health and fitness side of what it takes to be a professional ballet dancer, as well as the importance of nutrition in Tala’s daily routine.
It’s been fascinating to delve in to the world of ballet and learn about the determination and dedication it takes to make it in such a notoriously hard industry – so watch this space for even more media coverage on Tala and her exceptional talent!
